Network Introduction and Conclusion

The network topology shown is a bus network which is a network in which all nodes are connected to a single wire (the bus) that has two endpoints. The network comprises of thirty computers and is set up in Field-view 2 classroom. It required 1000 feet of Ethernet cable and the total cost for the implementation of this network is approximately $ 91,000 inclusive of the switch, Ethernet cable, RJ45 connector ends, modem and external router. The bus network is suitable for this location as it is relatively easy to implement and extend, cost effective and easy to maintain as cable faults are easily identified.

In conclusion, the bus topology is suitable for both the size and geometric shape of the classroom. Nodes can always be added to the network and maintenance is easy. However, in the future, problems such as performance degradation due to shared bandwidth as additional computers are added could arise.

Assignment 1: Plagerism

In today’s technology savvy world, information and its access is right at our fingertips. Gone are the days when research was a tedious manual process. Now it is all made simple with just a few keystrokes. An endless resource of information is literally just a click away. Of course this is a good thing as it makes us as students more productive and causes our work to be of a higher quality. However as the ‘Ying Yang’ proposes that in everything good there is bad, there are problems involved. This essay seeks to shed some light on the concepts of “copyright” and plagiarism.

The first term is copyright. One may ask, what is copyright? According to www.answers.com , a copyright is the legal right granted to an author, composer, playwright, publisher, or distributor to exclusive publication, production, sale, or distribution of a literary, musical, dramatic, or artistic work. In other words it is a bundle of exclusive rights granted by law to the creator of an original piece of work. This legal system protects a person’s original creation from plagiarism, a term that will be discussed later on. Stemming from the concept of copyright is a term ‘intellectual property’ which according to www.wikitonary.org, is any product of someone's intellect that has commercial value, especially copyrighted material, patents, and trademarks. When using someone’s information it is mandatory for you to cite the source or give reference or credit to the author. If this is not done you have violated or breeched the copyright and are now liable for attached consequence. A common practice among students is to copy images form the internet and use it as a graphic on their cover page among other uses. What the students fail to understand, which could be a lack of knowledge, is that the images may be copyrighted and therefore the source needs to be cited. It is ok to use images from the internet once credit is given to the copyright holder by means of a citation.

The second concept is plagiarism. This is a growing problem as is especially prevalent among our students. Plagiarism according to www.answers.com is the act of appropriating the literary composition of another author, or excerpts, ideas, or passages and passing the material off as one's own creation. This simply means using someone else's writings or ideas and passing them off as your own. The act of plagiarism can be committed by direct, word-for-word copying or the theft of the substance or idea of the work. For example, if a student copies a magazine entry and submits it as his own for a project is guilty of plagiarism. As with every violation of the law, plagiarism has consequences. Some moral consequences include the loss of good research and writing skills which life in college and beyond can be difficult without them. Also plagiarism is unfair to students who do their own work and jeopardizes the integrity of the grading system. I believe that students that plagiarize should receive a failing grade for the tendered assignment in question, failing grade for the course taken and in extreme cases expulsion from the institution.

In conclusion, it is necessary to uphold the terms and conditions of a copyright. Failure to do so results in plagiarism which undermines the academic integrity of oneself and one’s institution. The great Sir Isaac Newton himself said pertaining to knowledge "If I have seen further it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants" (wikiquote.org). Therefore it is only right to acknowledge our debt to those whose thinking has helped us. This can be achieved by giving the authors the rightful accolades they deserve by crediting others for their ideas and their words.

Are you ready to die?

Ah yes. So ive finally gotten around to writing my first blog. As i sat here pondering what my topic should be, a rather intresting question popped into my mind. ARE YOU READY TO DIE? Sounds cryptic and even creepy that this is the product of my subconcious but non the less it is a very relevant question. I sat there wondering what if a serial killer were to come into the library kidnap me, and sever my limbs, appendage by appendage, cut by cut. In my minds eye as I lay ther bleeding as the life left my dismembered body, i reaized that there was so much i hadnt done, wanted to do and still wanted to do. I thought about my future or at least the future that i imagined. My mind drifted to the car i was to have (eventhough I only have my learners liscence), my dream house, and my perfect kids. And then I realized, there was NO WAY that i was ready to die! In fact i wanted to live and the thought made me appreciate life even more. For a few moments i relished life and as if it was a physical entity and clutched on to it for dearlife. I just want to put the question out to the world. Are you redy to die? I appreciate your responses and comments.
